2017 marks the 200th anniversary of the tragic death in childbirth of Princess Charlotte, the only child of King George IV and heir to the Throne. Her magnificent memorial can be seen in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. On her death her uncles abandoned their mistresses and hastened to marry to produce the next sovereign of the House of Hanover. Her father, George IV, was the monarch who transformed Windsor Castle into a ‘Gothic’ masterpiece, spending more than £1m in 1820-30. Her grandfather was King George III, the king who had bouts of madness and when he did not recover was locked up in the castle during his last years. Join us for a fascinating tour around Windsor town to learn more about those scandalous royals, against the elegant backdrop of Georgian buildings scattered around the town.
This walking tour will last up to 1 and a half hours and is on level surfaces around central Windsor. It does not include entry into Windsor Castle.
